What is the Sandbar Adventure Miami?

The Sandbar Adventure is a private charter on Biscayne Bay: 2-hour minimum, and you can book up to 6 hours. Your USCG-licensed captain anchors on the flats so your group can swim and relax in waist-deep water. The $440 rate (2 hours) is for the boat, not per person, and covers up to ten guests.

Who It’s For

Who is the Sandbar Adventure for?

Families and friend groups who want lazy swim time on the bay rather than a high-speed tour. Kids are welcome.

  • Families and mixed groups: One private boat, up to ten guests, and 2 to 6 hours of swim-and-relax time on the flats.
  • Non-swimmers: Stay aboard or wear a USCG-rated life jacket in the water. The captain makes the safety call for the day.
  • First-time visitors: A local USCG-licensed captain who knows the anchor zones, channel traffic, and tide window.
  • Not the right fit: Want a high-speed jet ski hour or a golden-hour skyline cruise? See Miami Jet Ski Tours or the Private Sunset Cruise.

The Experience

What does a Miami sandbar charter feel like?

You board a private boat with your group only. Your captain runs out onto Biscayne Bay and anchors on the flats, where the water is typically waist-deep on calm days: roughly three to five feet over packed sand and seagrass.

Once the anchor is set, you swim, float, and take photos with the Miami skyline on the horizon. The depth drops quickly toward the channel edges, so the crew keeps everyone near the anchor zone. Low tide and an east wind can shorten the comfortable window, so your captain chooses the best stop for the day.

Nixon Sandbar is open bay water, not a beach you can walk to from Key Biscayne. A licensed captain who knows the flats is the only safe way there.

What to expect, from booking to dock

  1. Reserve your date: Book online. Your exact marina, arrival time, and captain contact arrive in your confirmation email.
  2. Arrive & check in: Arrive 30 minutes early and check in with your captain; if you’re running late, call or text (305) 772-9942.
  3. Safety briefing: The captain covers life jackets, the swim zone, and how to reboard. Jackets stay on until the captain says otherwise.
  4. Anchor on the flats: Swim and relax in the captain’s marked zone.
  5. Return to dock: The crew pulls the anchor and runs you back to the marina.

What’s Included

What’s included in your Sandbar Adventure?

One flat rate covers the boat, your captain, and life jackets for your booked time on the bay (2 to 6 hours).

  • Private boat: Your group only, with no strangers on board.
  • USCG-licensed captain: A credentialed operator who chooses a safe anchor zone for the wind, tide, and traffic.
  • Life jackets: USCG-rated jackets on board. Non-swimmers wear one in the water.
  • Two to six hours on the bay: From cast-off to return (2-hour minimum). Swim time depends on conditions at the stop.

Where We Meet

Where do we meet for the Sandbar Adventure?

We operate exclusively from licensed commercial marinas, including Miami Beach Marina, Venetian Marina & Yacht Club, and Rickenbacker Marina. Your exact marina, arrival time, and captain contact are emailed in your booking confirmation. Please arrive 30 minutes before departure so you have time to settle in, use the restroom, or grab anything you need from a nearby store. Bring photo ID and the card you booked with. No ID, no launch. Running late? Call or text us at (305) 772-9942 so we can stay in touch.

Water Shoes

Wear water shoes, fins, or sandals before you step off the boat. Shells, rocks, and seagrass on the flats can cut bare feet.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, towels, water shoes, photo ID, and your booking confirmation.

Weather & Safety Calls

Only Miami Tours and Water Adventures makes the weather call. If the flats are not safe, we can run a private scenic cruise instead. If we cancel before departure for safety, you get a full refund or a new date; if weather interrupts your trip after departure, a pro-rated credit or voucher (valid 15 months) may be issued.

Cancellations in Writing

Email info@miamitoursandwateradventures.com to cancel, and keep the written confirmation we send back. Full details are in our Terms, Billing Conditions & Cancellation Policies.

Safety & Standards

Who captains the Sandbar Adventure?

The open-bay flats sit next to shipping channels. Your USCG-licensed captain chooses the anchor zone, hands out life jackets, and keeps your group inside the marked swim area.

  • USCG-Licensed Captain

Every sandbar charter is commanded by a U.S. Coast Guard credentialed operator, with standards maintained by the National Maritime Center (USCG). Meet Felipe and the team.

  • Life Jackets and Swim Zone

USCG-rated jackets are on board, and non-swimmers wear one in the water. Stay near the captain’s anchor zone, since the depth drops quickly toward channel edges.

The kindness, courtesy, and hospitality Mario and Nico showed my family on our first ever snorkeling adventure was amazing. The explanation of the process and the patience Nico exhibited made the experience enjoyable. Nico was a great captain on our private boat tour. Very personable. I couldn’t swim but he jumped in the water and was the guide for myself and family so we could experience the beautiful sites under the water. The cost was reasonable and definitely worth it (the tour and snorkeling). A must do!

Captain Nico and Javier! Mucho gusto por su hospitalidad. You made our last minute booking comfortable and fun for our family of 4 under 7. From snorkeling to sandbar we saw dolphins, a manatee that swam right under our boat, HUGE conchs and so many cool creatures. For those of us that were hesitant you were patient and encouraging. Thank you for everything. We can't wait to come back and do it again!

Captain Erik was so much fun! He was very knowledgeable about the area and the marine life in the area! While snorkeling we saw conch and stingrays, lots of fish including red tailed snapper and yellow tailed snapper! My husband saw a small nurse shark hiding in the reef and on the way back to the dock we saw dolphins!!! 5 stars!

Felipe was personal, friendly, and very patient. You can tell he enjoys this job. I had a 10-year-old son with me snorkeling for the very first time. My son was so comfortable with him that he held on to the float and snorkel while Felipe dragged him in the water. It was a private boat tour and snorkel. Beautiful view of all the high rises and Felipe filled us in the history. Thank you Felipe for making it memorable.

We had an absolute blast! We booked a 3 hour private boat and we could not have asked for a better experience. Booking the experience was easy, we were met as soon as we arrived and escorted to our boat. Captain Erik was excellent and professional and a really nice guy! He was knowledgeable about the area, we felt safe, he took us snorkeling and was always on top of safety and giving us the best experience. We saw Manatees, we saw dolphins. Erik gave us everything and more! We had time to snorkel as well as swim at the sand bar as well as touring around Fisher Island and all along the coast. Erik could not have been better. We were so lucky to have gotten him as our Captain. Highly recommend. Three hours felt more like five. It was the highlight of our trip! Thank you so much!
